Vessel Traffic System apps introduced for VOC port

VO Chidambaranar Port in Tuticorin received a major boost when Sudhansh Pant, Minister of Shipping of the Government of India, launched six projects during his visit on Monday.

One of the major projects launched was the Vessel Traffic System mobile app, which aims to improve navigation in and out of the port. Developed by the National Technology Center for Ports, Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC), the Vessel Traffic System App features AI-powered intelligent virtual assistance that improves visibility of navigation channels, while the Pilotage Chart app digitizes pilotage movements. Both apps are part of the port’s Digital India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

In addition to the mobile apps, the secretary has also inaugurated a web-based GIS system for identifying various buildings, lots and other installations within the port, as well as a cloud-based storage migration system with a disaster recovery facility. A modernization of the high-voltage network and a 4000 square meter herb garden with over 500 herb plants and trees were also tackled.

During the event, Pant urged the port to complete all infrastructure expansion projects within the planned completion time and to scale up its digitization initiatives, EoDB measures for EXIM trade, port-led industrialization and investments in green hydrogen and green ammonia projects.

In addition, the secretary attended an awards night held earlier at the port to recognize the contributions of key industry players that have had a significant impact on the port’s logistical performance.
