UP Government Named Top Buyer in Fiscal Year 2022-23 by GeM Portal: Center Govt. Data

According to central government data, Uttar Pradesh emerged as the largest buyer of goods and services among all states and union territories in 2022-23 by government portal GeM.

The data showed that the Uttar Pradesh government and its agencies procured Rs.12,152 crore worth of goods and services through the Union Commerce Department’s Government E-Marketplace (GeM) platform in the past financial year. It was followed by Gujarat (7,964 crore rupees), Maharashtra (4,130 crore rupees), Jammu and Kashmir (1,999 crore rupees) and Madhya Pradesh (1,983 crore rupees).

The GeM portal was launched on August 9, 2016 for the online purchase of goods and services by all central government ministries and departments.

GeM has over 63,000 government buyers organizations, over 6 million sellers and service providers offering a wide range of products and services.

Currently, government agencies, ministries, public sector entities, state governments and central armed police forces are permitted to conduct transactions through this portal. The portal offers a wide range of products from office supplies to vehicles.

Key product categories include automobiles, computers and office furniture. Services such as transport, logistics, waste management, webcasting and analysis are also listed on the portal.

Among central government departments, the Department of Energy was the largest buyer of the platform in 2022-23. The ministry procured 30,572.9 crore worth of goods and services. They were followed by the Ministry of Defense (28,741.2 crore rupees), the Ministry of Oil and Gas (28,157.2 crore rupees), the Ministry of Steel (12,527.3 crore rupees) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (7,158.3 crore rupees).

South Korea’s KONEPS is the largest platform of its kind in the world. GeM is currently in third place after GeBIZ from Singapore.
