Two infra projects will give Gujarat Ports an important boost

Ports in Gujarat are poised for a business boost with the announcement of two major infrastructure projects in the state – the Haryana-Gujarat Economic Railway Corridor and the greenfield six-lane expressway of the Amritsar-Jamnagar Economic Corridor.

The Union Ministry of Railways has approved the 129km South Haryana Economic Rail Corridor, which will provide a direct rail link from Haryana to Gujarat’s four ports – Kandla, Mundra, Navlakhi and Jakhau. The upcoming project aims to drastically reduce travel time between Delhi and other cities of Rajasthan including Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Barmer, Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh.

According to the report, the railway corridor will improve the connection between Delhi and regions like Gandhidham, Bhuj and Dwarka in Gujarat. A senior Gujarat government official told the Mirror that ports in North and South India will benefit from the connectivity as of now. “But these two major infrastructure developments will strengthen Gujarat’s port sector,” the official said. The official further said that of all non-major ports in India, Gujarat ports account for 60% of the country’s cargo.

“The rail corridor and expressway link will save much time and money, which will boost import-export trade from Gujarat ports,” the official said. Since Gujarat has the longest coastline in India, more ports could be built in the state.

A Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) official said high-speed rail and express services are a must for port development. “The GMB has many programs available for port development. Therefore, as trade increases, there is an opportunity for the development of new ports here,” the official said.

The greenfield six-lane expressway of the Amritsar-Jamnagar Economic Corridor will shorten the distance between Amritsar and Jamnagar from 1,430 km to 1,256 km.

According to reports, the greenfield expressway will link Rajasthan with Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir, while major commercial seaports such as Jamnagar and Kandla will also be accessible from Bikaner and Rajasthan.
