Truck drivers could get clean energy if India proposes ‘Green Ports Policy’

India’s proposed green ports policy is an important step to reduce the carbon footprint of the transport sector and make India’s ports more sustainable. India’s 12 major ports currently handle about half of the country’s total freight traffic, and each port has been urged to have at least one LNG bunkering station by 2030 and a sufficient number of electric vehicle charging stations on or near the port by 2025.

The proposed policy will also include other measures such as promoting renewable energy, reducing air emissions, optimizing water use, improving waste management and reducing CO2 emissions per tonne of cargo handled by 30% by 2030 and 70% by 2047 .

Increasing green spaces and electrification of ports

In order to capture fugitive emissions and muffle the noise generated in the port environment, ports need to increase green spaces through effective plantations and landscape development. The goal is to expand the green belt by over 20% by 2030 and by 33% by 2047.

In addition, ports need to make efforts to electrify their vehicles and equipment. The electrification rate of port equipment is expected to reach 50% by 2030 and 90% by 2047. Also, by 2035, green ammonia bunkers and fueling stations will be established in all major ports.

The major ports in India are under the administrative control of the Ministry of Shipping, while the remaining ports, known as non-major ports, are under the jurisdiction of the state governments and their maritime authorities. The proposed green ports policy applies to both major and minor ports in India.

The policy aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the transport sector and make India’s ports more sustainable. This is in line with India’s commitment to reduce its carbon emissions by 33-35% by 2030 under the Paris Climate Agreement.
