Third section of railway between Vijayawada, Gudur opened

Zone South Central Railway (SCR) has completed and put into service the third section of line between Manubolu and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, an official said on Monday.

The new third line is part of the Vijayawada – Gudur tripling and electrification project, which will play a crucial role in connecting the northern and eastern parts of the country to the south.

As part of large-scale infrastructure improvement work in FY2022 23 with a particular focus on doubling, tripling and electrifying railway tracks, the SCR zone has completed 29.3km of work.

“The section (Manubolu – Nellore) between Vijayawada and Gudur on SCR lies on the Grand Trunk Route along the coastal region of Andhra Pradesh and plays a crucial role in connecting the northern and eastern parts of the country with the southern states,” said the official in an explanation.

According to the railway, this line was severely congested due to a steady increase in passenger and freight trains, prompting the Railway Zone to decongest this section.

The major 288 km Vijayawada – Gudur Line 3 project was approved in 2015–16 at a cost of Rs 3,246 crore and executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL).

Five sections of the project have previously been completed, including Ulavapadu – Kavali (29 km), Talamanchi – Bitragunta – Sri Venkateswarapalem (24.8 km), Sri Venkateswarapalem – Kavali (12.2 km), Talamanchi – Nellore (17 km) and Karavadi – Chinna Ganjam (23.5 km).

Along with the newly completed section, a length of 135.8km of the project has now been completed with electrification.

Arun Kumar Jain, General Manager of the SCR Zone, noted that work on the third line between Vijayawada and Gudur is being initiated with the highest priority, including plans to bring additional sections of this tripling project into operation this fiscal year.
