The port terminal operator based in the United Arab Emirates is aiming for a direct shipping connection between Karachi and Sharjah

A UAE-based port terminal operator plans to set up a direct link between Pakistan’s Karachi and Sharjah’s Khor Fakkan port via shipping lines using the fastest sea route, a senior official said.

Gulftainer was founded in 1976 to operate the Middle East’s first container terminal in Sharjah. The company has grown into a globally competitive port operator and third party logistics service provider, managing some of the most productive ports in the world.

The Khor Fakkan container terminal itself is considered one of the fastest facilities in the world.

“The thing about Khor Fakkan is that from Karachi it’s only about 25 to 26 hours by steam at 20 knots,” Andrew Hoad, the group’s chief commercial officer, told Arab News during his visit to Pakistan.

“We are trying to partner with shipping companies that want to connect the UAE directly to Pakistan and Karachi because Khor Fakkan is such a rational place to do that, with a short crossing time and quick clearances, rather than doing all the way through the.” Strait of Hormuz and further up into the Gulf,” he added.

Hoad said his company will hold road shows to showcase opportunities and expertise in Pakistan and attract exporters.

“We will certainly participate in a number of road shows within Pakistan, speaking to the export community for various commodities and trying to sell them the benefits of this quick transaction to the UAE via Khor Fakkan,” he continued.

The port operator prides itself on being one of the world’s leading providers of international ports and logistics solutions, as well as the first and only Middle Eastern operator to manage ports in the United States.

Gulftainer’s portfolio also includes seaports in Saudi Arabia and Iraq, as well as trucking companies, supply chain operations and logistics cities through Momentum Logistics and Avalon Transport.

Hoad said the UAE had become a hub for expertise to be shared with Pakistan over the past 15 years.

“The UAE has a number of really high-quality port operators,” he added. “DP World is one; Abu Dhabi Ports and Gulftainer are others. I think the UAE has become something of a center of excellence over the last 10 or 15 years.”

“Hopefully, as Gulftainer, we can share some of that expertise if desired or needed.”
