The government plans to develop the port of Nehru into a smart port within a year: Sonowal

The government plans to develop the country’s leading container port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, into a fully smart port within a year, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Thursday.

Celebrating the 34th anniversary of the JNPA, the Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways said the government wanted the facility to compete with the best ports in the world.

“The government will develop JNPA into a full smart port within a year. “We want it to be a fully electronically networked system for better services,” said the minister.

He also said that the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) saw 29 industrial plants being built in its special economic zone as part of the Sagarmala project.

The SEZ project at JNPA is part of the port-led industrialization plan being developed by JN Port on 277.38 hectares of vacant land and incorporating the port’s land use plan.

An initiative under the National Guiding Policy of the Sagarmala Ministry of Shipping, the SEZ aims to boost exports, create jobs, investment and own cargo by enabling port-led industrialization.

The facility has been in operation since July 2021.

The Port Authority of Jawaharlal Nehru saw record growth in container traffic in FY23 at 6.05 million TEU (twenty foot equivalent units), a 6.4 percent year-on-year growth.

Total container traffic in the port in the fiscal year ended March 2022 was 5.68 million TEU.
