Svitzer and Caterpillar partner to use dual-fuel methanol engines in tractors Ship’s crew

Caterpillar Marine and Svitzer, a global tugboat company and a unit of AP Moller – Maersk, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to support Svitzer’s decarbonization strategy through the introduction of methanol as a fuel in newbuilds and the conversion of existing tugs.

The agreement focuses on the implementation of dual-fuel methanol engines, which will allow Svitzer to use methanol across its fleet, including its existing Cat-powered tow tractors. The MoU follows the recent announcement of Cat 3500 E-Series methanol readiness in September 2022 and formalizes collaboration to introduce engine technologies that can reduce life cycle greenhouse gas emissions.

Svitzer has a significant number of Cat systems-powered tractors and has set ambitious decarbonization targets for its future fleet. The company aims to reduce the carbon intensity of its entire fleet by 50% by 2030 and to become carbon neutral in all areas by 2040.

The companies described the collaboration as an important step towards implementing solutions that support Svitzer’s decarbonization strategy.

The MOU focuses on finding solutions for existing and future ships that can support a reduction in carbon intensity in the maritime industry. Fuel flexibility is a key factor enabling operators to lower their carbon intensity and the agreement will provide retrofit solutions for Svitzer’s existing fleet.

“The focus of our collaboration is twofold. We’re helping Svitzer enable tugboats to run on methanol with diesel-like performance while providing fuel flexibility, which is key to enabling operators to lower their carbon intensity with green methanol as availability increases. In addition, we make full use of the insights to offer conversion solutions for the existing fleet. This is critical to achieving the level of methanol acceptance that Svitzer is targeting to achieve its goals,” said Andres Perez, global tug segment manager at Caterpillar Marine.

Svitzer is making pragmatic decisions to support the reduction of carbon intensity in the maritime industry, and the collaboration between Caterpillar and Svitzer is an important step in implementing solutions that support their decarbonization strategy.
