As advances in technology continue to transform every industry, including ours, large language models such as ChatGPT and Bard have the potential to help directly sailors to carry out their tasks more safely and professionally. How can a seaman use these tools to improve his performance on board? Let’s look at some examples.

An example is providing instant, human-readable access to regulations and policies. A sailor might ask ChatGPT: “What are the requirements for fire protection on board a ship?” ChatGPT would then provide a summary of the relevant regulations, including the specific requirements for fire detection, prevention and suppression.

Navigating the complex landscape of maritime regulations and policies can be challenging. ChatGPT can serve as an on-demand reference tool for seafarers, providing instant access to the information they need. By simply asking the AI ​​model about a specific regulation or policy, seafarers can get a concise summary to help them stay informed and comply.

A second example is using ChatGPT or Bard as a translation tool. A sailor might ask it to translate a message from English to Chinese. The tool would then provide the translation in real time, allowing the sailor to communicate effectively with a crew member who speaks Chinese. Effective communication is critical to ensuring safety and collaboration among crew members. These tools can help seafarers improve their onboard communications by offering real-time language translation or by providing guidance on how to convey complex concepts more clearly.

ChatGPT and Bard have the potential to be powerful tools for seafarers, helping them access critical information, improve communication, troubleshoot problems and continuously develop their skills. However, there are real limitations. A major limitation of ChatGPT is that it currently only knows information from before October 2021 and therefore may not have current answers. And while Bard doesn’t have this limitation, in my experiments with both, ChatGPT tends to provide more comprehensive and useful answers.

It is also very important to remember that these tools are far from perfect and although they usually provide very useful and even insightful information, sometimes they can provide information that is incomplete or even completely wrong. As such, they are far from replacing professional expertise. However, if understood, they can still serve as an excellent resource for brainstorming and gathering preliminary information. As with any technology, the key to success is finding the right balance between using AI-driven tools like ChatGPT or Bard and relying on the knowledge, experience and judgment of the seafarers themselves. By taking a thoughtful and responsible approach to the use of large language models, the maritime industry can empower its employees to excel in their roles and create a safer and more efficient operating environment for all stakeholders.
