Ro-Ro cargo ship stranded on lighthouse off Cornwall, England

A roll on roll off (Ro-Ro) cargo ship is stranded at Wolf Rock Lighthouse off Land’s End in Cornwall, England.

The ship sails under the Maltese flag M/V MazarineAccording to Equassis, the vehicle, built in 2009, is owned by Luxembourg-based European logistics service provider CLdN.

The ship reportedly lost power during a voyage from Ringaskiddy, Ireland to Zeebrugge, Belgium and drifted into the lighthouse. According to reports, there are 25 crew members on board.

RNLI lifeboats from Sennen Cove and Penlee were dispatched along with a HM Coastguard helicopter and tugboat.

“HM Coastguard is coordinating response after a ship off the Isles of Scilly reported a power failure near Wolf Rock Lighthouse,” a HM Coastguard said said a spokesman. “The crew on board should be unharmed and safe. A tugboat was sent to assist.

“A Coastguard helicopter has been dispatched from Penlee and Sennen Cove along with the RNLI lifeboats in case the crew needs to be evacuated. A second helicopter is on standby in case it is needed.”

Located eight nautical miles from Land’s End, the Wolf Rock Lighthouse, built in 1869, is known, according to operator Trinity House, for being the first rock lighthouse in 1972 to have a helicopter deck built onto the lantern housing.
