Rig fire at Mobile, Alabama junkyard

A fire has broken out on a semi-submersible platform being dismantled in Mobile, Alabama.

Several firefighting units arrived at the scene and discovered a “multi-story, oil rig-like structure” with heavy smoke and flames, the Mobile Fire Department reported.

The platform is said to contain diesel, hydraulic fluid and oil with other potential hazards on board.

Local news reports indicate that the platform is being scrapped and the fire was started during hot work.

The platform is the MSS3 Oil rig being dismantled at Alabama Shipyard. The shipyard released video of the 130-foot derrick that was recently dismantled.

gCaptain is informed that there are no injuries.

The mobile fire department said crews are working closely together to mitigate the incident as quickly as possible.
