Port of Gopalpur achieves highest ever record in cargo loading

The Port of Gopalpur made history by achieving the highest ever load of 59,150 tonnes of lump iron ore in 24 hours on M/s JSW Steel nominated vessel MV Reachy Spring. The port also set a record by loading 86,700 tons of lump iron ore onto the ship in 40 hours on July 15, 2023, for an average load of 2,167 tons per hour. For this record, the ship’s captain awarded the Port of Gopalpur with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Commenting on the achievements, Amit Saboo, Managing Director of SP Port Maintenance said: “We are extremely proud of our team’s achievements. The record-breaking performance at the Port of Gopalpur demonstrates the efficiency of cargo management and the port’s capacity to handle large volumes of cargo.”

V. Janardhana Rao, Chief Executive Officer and CEO of Gopalpur Ports Limited, also remarked, “Gopalpur Port gives priority to its customers and conducts extensive planning prior to vessel docking to ensure proper provisioning and loading of the vessel with the utmost safety .” The state’s best-connected port by rail and road, it continues to set new records in cargo handling. “In the recent past, the port has unloaded more than 32,000 tons of coal cargo from the ship MV New Prestige within 24 hours.”

The port is capable of handling more than 20 rakes per day and this record-breaking performance in ship operations reinforces its position as a reliable and competitive seaport. Gopalpur is on track to become the next super port in East India, Rao added.

The port of Gopalpur has been under the management control of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group since 2017 and provides the necessary marine infrastructure to handle cape vessels up to a draft of 14.5 metres. In addition, the port offers open and closed storage areas for the storage of approximately 2.5 tons of cargo, spread over a wide cargo mix and customer base. Gopalpur Port has eight operational sidings for the efficient and smooth handling of multiple cargoes.

Strategically located between the ports of Paradip and Visakhapatnam, Gopalpur is unique for imports and coastal transport of cargo on the east coast of India.
