New cargo terminal at Pune Airport to be operational by the end of May

The new cargo terminal at Pune International Airport with a cargo capacity of 36,000 tons is expected to start operations at the end of May. Apart from that, the airport is expected to receive more international destinations starting next month.

Boosting the city’s trade and industry, the airport’s cargo facility will soon be operational when 95 percent of the construction work is complete.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has started the relocation of cargo facilities to this new location within the Pune Airport campus.

The operation of this cargo facility at the new location is overseen by the AAI subsidiary “AAI Cargo Logistics and allied Services Firm”.

The Air Ministry has been working on numerous expansion projects at Lohegaon Airport for the past two years.

“The new cargo terminal is nearing completion and the work will be completed soon. We aim to be up and running by the end of May, and the final work, such as installing surveillance cameras and other minor tasks, is already underway. The ability to handle cargo items would be increased once this new terminal is fully operational,” said Santosh Doke, Director of Pune Airport.

The existing capacity of the cargo facility is 25,000 tons and will be increased to 36,000 tons in the new facility. As if now domestic cargo transportation is operated from Pune airport while most logistic companies need to send their goods from Mumbai airport to international destinations. As cargo facility space expands from Pune Airport, several new domestic destinations as well as international cities will also be added to cargo services.

“We are pleased that the cargo capacity at Pune Airport will soon be increased as we frequently need to send our goods to various international destinations via Mumbai Airport at higher rates. The new facility will benefit not only local businesses but also our overseas customers,” said Sachin Patange, a city-based dried fruit wholesaler.
