Misje Rederi’s third Hybrid EcoBulk vessel puts to sea in Sri Lanka Ship’s crew

Sri Lanka-based shipbuilder Colombo Dockyard has launched the third hybrid vessel in a series of six new eco-bulk carriers being built for Norwegian shipowner Misje Rederi AS.

The new EcoBulk hybrid vessel Misje Viola was launched at a ceremony on July 22 at Colombo Shipyard in Sri Lanka, it has been announced.

The 90 meter long bulk carrier is the third in a series of six new eco-bulk carriers that Colombo Dockyard is building for Misje Rederi. The second ship of this class, Misje Verde, was handed over to the shipping company in April, while the naming ceremony took place in June this year.

The first bulk carrier, Misje Vita, was delivered in September last year, while the keel-laying of the fourth ship took place in November 2022.

The EcoBulk hybrid bulk carriers feature a hybrid energy storage battery system. The concept and basic design of the ships were developed by Wärtsilä Ship Design Norway AS. The fully integrated hybrid solution will enable ships to enter and exit ports and conduct cargo operations with zero emissions, the shipbuilder said.

In addition, the vessels are designed to be converted to fully emission-free operation as technology advances. The shipowner ordered up to ten eco bulk carriers in August 2020. The deal included six fixed ships with an option for four more ships.
