Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways initiative for Health for All

In India, health infrastructure is considered an important indicator for understanding the health care regulations and welfare mechanisms in a country. Recently, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, granted approval for the development of a 150-bed multi-compartment hospital at the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) in PPP mode at an estimated cost of 107 crores.

“This hospital will provide quality healthcare services to port employees, CISF, retired personnel and their dependents, as well as non-NMPA patients living in the surrounding region of the port, thereby realizing our Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji’s vision of access to quality healthcare to the last person in the last mile” said Shri Sarbananda Sonowal.

Currently, the NMPA has a 32-bed hospital offering OPD and diagnostic services to its patients (NMPA beneficiaries). The new 150-bed specialty hospital will offer a wide range of medical services and will be able to treat many different types of diseases and conditions. This project will provide patients with all the amenities such as IPD facilities, intensive care unit, advanced diagnostic facilities (CTScan, MRI, etc.), multi-specialty services (oncology, cardiology, neurology and nephrology, etc.), emergency care, diagnosis, surgery and treatment under one roof that are not available in the existing Port Hospital.

As part of this project, 3 hectares of land designated by the Port Authority will be given to the concessionaire for this development. The existing hospital on approximately 1.3 hectares of land is to be handed over to the concessionaire for operations, which is to be handed over to the Port Authority after the new multi-specialty hospital is operational.

This project will rationalize the annual medical expenses incurred in treating their employees. It will provide medical care to the surrounding population within a 5km radius of Pana
