Matson converts third container ship to LNG fuel Ship’s crew

US-based shipping company Matson (NYSE: MATX) has confirmed that it will upgrade the main engine on its container ship The diamond headMAN Energy Solutions has confirmed on a dual-fuel ME-GI unit that can run on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

This follows an option included in a contract signed with MAN Energy Solutions in June 2022 to carry out an identical conversion on a sister ship, the Daniel K. Inouye. Retrofitting the diamond head, a 3,600 TEU Jones Act compliant Aloha-class vessel built in 2019, will be operated by MAN PrimeServ, the after-sales division of MAN Energy Solutions. The diamond head is currently equipped with a MAN B&W S90ME-C10.5 engine.

The retrofit is part of a growing trend among shipowners to choose dual-fuel retrofits for their existing ships in service to achieve fleet transformation goals while benefiting from upcoming regulations such as the CO2 Intensity Indicator (CII) and energy efficiency to achieve Existing Ship Index (EEXI). Converting a MAN B&W engine to dual-fuel operation is straightforward, as the company’s standard electronically controlled diesel engines are designed to be “dual-fuel ready” and therefore easily retrofittable, offering a viable option for shipowners wanting to achieve a net Provide way -Zero carbon footprint by 2050.

Captain Jack Sullivan, Senior Vice President, Vessel Operations & Engineering at Matson, said, “This will be the third vessel that Matson is retrofitting with dual-fuel LNG capability. Each retrofit is a significant step towards our corporate sustainability goals of achieving a 40% reduction in Scope 1 fleet greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and net-zero Scope 1 GHG emissions by 2050.”

The option to take advantage of the retrofit follows Matson’s recent announcement of construction of three LNG-fuelled newbuilds, also powered by ME-GI engines. Since the first two-stroke ME-GI (LNG) retrofit in 2015, MAN Energy Solutions has built an impressive reference list and expanded its portfolio of dual-fuel retrofits to include fuels such as LPG and methanol.
