Mangalore’s new Port Authority celebrates World Environment Day with a commitment to sustainability and conservation

The New Mangalore Port Authority celebrated World Environment Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness and promoting action to protect the planet. dr AV Ramana, Chairman of the NMPA, opened the program by speaking in August in the presence of the main guest Dr. Ravi, Environmental Officer of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Mangalore and Guest of Honor KG Nath, Dy, lit the lamp. dr Ravi, KSPCB’s Environmental Officer, presented an initiative to protect the environment at Mission LiFE. He called for a restraint on using single-use plastics, which have the greatest impact on the environment. He also recalled the lifestyle of the ancestors who valued the environment and created traditions and customs to protect the ecosystem.

dr AV Ramana, Chairman of the NMPA, mentioned the damage that humans are doing to the environment in his Presidential Address. He called for stronger enforcement of pollution control laws. He spoke about the government’s Panchamruth program. By India, which aims to limit carbon emissions intensity to less than 45% by 2030 and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.

He expressed his joy and pride when he said the port currently handles 86% of its cargo mechanically and electrically as part of the government’s green initiatives. This controls carbon emissions to the maximum. The port is fully solar powered and self-sufficient in electricity generation for self-consumption, rainwater treatment in the port for use, lighting system conversion to LED and for energy saving, introduction of electric vehicles, Vermi composting plant for waste disposal and sewage treatment plant”.

As part of the Waste to Wealth concept, the port has generated revenue of approximately 1.2 crore through the collection and disposal of hazardous waste in accordance with the 2016 Hazardous Waste Management Regulations.

In the month of May 2023, 228 seedlings were planted within the shipyard and port colony in the month of June 2023. The concept of LiFE, ie Lifestyle for the Environment, was introduced by the Prime Minister at the World Summit of Heads of State and Government in Glasgow at COP26, when he made a clear call to revitalize the global pursuit of environmentally friendly lifestyles and practices.
