Japan-US container exports surge in March

According to Descartes Datamyne, container shipments from Japan to the United States in March reached 54,744 TEU (based on volumes in Japanese ports of origin), up 14.9% month-on-month but down 5.8% month-on-month corresponding month in 2022.

Direct shipments from Japan to the United States totaled 33,765 TEU, down 10.7% year-on-year.

The total number of TEUs handled en route was 20,979, breaking the 20,000 TEU mark for the first time in 2023.

In transhipment boxes, South Korea was responsible for 14,153 TEU, an increase of 12.8%; and Taiwan, 3,380 TEU, up a whopping 42.9%. In contrast, transhipments in China fell by 23.7% to 2,433 TEU and in Singapore by 54.6% to 539 TEU.
