IINO LINES and J-POWER collaborate on the world’s first rotor sail installation on a coal carrier Ship’s crew

Japan-based company IINO LINES and J-POWER, the Japanese utility, have agreed to install a Norsepower Rotor Sail™ on the coal carrier M/B YodohimeThis marks the world’s first installation of a rotor sail on a coal bulk carrier.

The Norsepower Rotor Sail™ is a modernized version of the Flettner rotor, which uses wind to generate thrust and, in combination with the navigation optimization system, reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by around 6-10%.

Installation is scheduled for the third quarter of 2024.

For IINO Lines, the installation is the second vessel to be fitted with Norsepower Rotor Sails™, following the installation of two Rotor Sails on a newly built Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) in South Korea. Installation in this project is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024.

For J-POWER, the installation is the second use of an additional wind propulsion system on a special coal carrier, following the installation of a Seawing automated kite system on board M/V Corona Citruswhich was announced back in March.
