HMM orders three car transporters in Guangzhou Ship’s crew

HMM, South Korea’s flagship airline, is reviewing its past to diversify its fleet.

According to Clarkson’s Research, the company has ordered three 8,600 CEU car transporters from GSI Nansha in China. The ships will deliver in 2026. No price has been announced.

HMM was a major operator of car transporters for many years before the restructuring. The company has outlined plans to diversify its fleet in the coming years, capitalizing on the huge gains it has made in the container sector since 2020.

The global order book for auto carriers is up 30% year-to-date and now accounts for 25% of the fleet on the water, according to data from Gersemi Asset Management. Another notable trend in this booming sector is the re-entry of global container ships.

Global container transporters have tried to get in on the action, with VesselsValue noting that COSCO, CMA CGM and HMM have ordered and chartered vehicle transporters over the past year.
