Customs officer detained in Raigad for stealing goods worth Rs 56 crore

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested a Customs Officer (CHA) who allegedly colluded with some others to break into three customs-sealed containers in Nhava Sheva.

He is also said to have stolen the imported goods, namely betel nuts, black paper areca nuts and other items valued at Rs 56 crore, which were being held in bonded warehouses. The arrested agent was identified as Akshay Shankar Phadale, a resident of Bhatwadi in Ghatkopar.

Customs officials had reported that goods confiscated by the department and approved for storage at Akshay Logistic were secretly removed and illegally diverted to the local market to evade customs. Officials said Akshay Logistic violated the imposed condition when it granted the license for the public bonded warehouse.
