Container ship spills empty containers after sinking in Taiwan

The Palau-flagged container ship ANGEL sank overnight off Taiwan’s Kaohsiung port after its hull was flooded and several empty containers fell into the water.

The incident forced authorities to close the port to all shipping traffic.

All 19 crew members left the ship and were picked up safely. The port was reopened after officials again found it safe.

The shipowner must submit a salvage plan while authorities investigate the cause of the incident.

No oil spill was reported as a result of the incident.
