Container ship OOCL Megamax makes maiden call in Hamburg

On May 1, 2023, one of the largest container ships in the world, OOCL Spain, arrived at Hamburger Container Terminal Tollerort.

The ship belongs to COSCO’s own shipping company Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) and has a capacity of 24,188 TEU. OOCL Spain is 399.9 meters long and 61.3 wide.

The ship’s owners see the boxship as notable for the amount of state-of-the-art “smart technology” on board, built by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering.

A total of 234 calls by Megamax container ships with more than 18,000 TEU in the Port of Hamburg last year meant an increase of 6%. The first indicators suggest that this trend will be confirmed in the first quarter of 2023.

“The call by OOCL Spain has strengthened the trend that more and more Megamax ships are calling at the Port of Hamburg. In order to remain competitive, it is of course crucial to keep our waterway in good condition,” says Axel Mattern, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing.

The first of twelve MGX 24 series ships, OOCL Spain was commissioned in March and operates liner services between Asia and Northern Europe.
