CMA CGM announced direct shipping service from Bangladesh to Middle East

CMA CGM Group, a global provider of sea, land and air logistics solutions, today announced the launch of the new Bangladesh India Gulf Express (BIGEX) service. It will debut as the first and fastest direct service connecting Bangladesh with Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi in the Gulf; as well as Nhava Sheva and Mundra in India.

BIGEX will set sail from Chittagong Port on April 5th. Three 1,700 TEU vessels deployed on the service will operate between the westbound rotation of Chittagong – Colombo – Mangalore – Nhava Sheva – Mundra; and the eastern leg to Jebel Ali – Khalifa Port.

Conversion of the sea route from Bangladesh to the Middle East and the Indian west coast

The launch of BIGEX maps the Bangladesh-India-Sri Lanka-Gulf corridor, transforming Bangladesh’s sea route to the Gulf and the Indian west coast. Exports from Chittagong, characterized by fast transit times, will reach Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi in just 14 and 15 days respectively. A more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to trucking, BIGEX will bring shipments from Bangladesh to Nhava Sheva and Mundra in 8 and 10 days respectively.

Diversifying Bangladesh’s transhipment connectivity

BIGEX will also diversify Chittagong’s connectivity to transhipment hubs beyond the main Asian ports to the Gulf and West Coast ports of India. This expands routes to markets and further shortens transit time, for example for cargo bound for Bangladesh to the USA, which is routed via Colombo.

Providing end-to-end shipping and domestic solutions

CMA CGM Group entered Bangladesh in 1996 and currently employs nearly 80 people across three agency offices in Chittagong, Dhaka and Khulna. It currently operates three CNC maritime services – Bay Bengal Express (BBX), BBX2 and BBX3 – calling at the Port of Chittagong each week.

In addition to container shipping, the CMA CGM Group offers rail return transport from the port of Chittagong to the Inland Container Deport in Dhaka; and inland waterway services from Chittagong Port to Inland Container Terminal in Pangaon and SAPL River Terminal Muktarpur, Munshiganj. The group provides end-to-end logistics solutions in the country, including air, sea and ground services.

“CMA CGM Group is committed to developing our shipping and logistics capabilities to support investments in Bangladesh and along the supply chain. The launch of BIGEX creates the favorable Bangladesh-India-Sri Lanka-Gulf corridor and opens new routes to and from global markets for Bangladesh-based companies,” said Laurent Olmeta, Chief Executive Officer of CMA CGM Asia Pacific Limited.

“BIGEX will change the way our shippers get their exports to global markets in the fastest and most efficient way. Not only will it lead to more sea route options, but it can also seamlessly connect cargo for air transfers from Dubai to destinations in Europe and the US,” said T Sivakumar, Managing Director of CMA CGM Bangladesh.
