BW Global United LPG India Pvt Ltd (BW LPG India) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Indian Maritime University (IMU) Chennai to award scholarships to deserving female cadets from the university.
Since 2021, BW LPG India, India’s largest owner and operator of Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs), has been awarding scholarships to female cadets studying at IMU who have enrolled in the four-year B.Tech (Marine Engineering) or the three-year B. SC (nautical) degrees.
Beginning this year, female cadets enrolled in the year-long Diploma in Nautical Science courses are also eligible for the scholarship – offering an industry-first sponsorship that also includes full financial support. The scholarships cover all academic fees and guarantee placement with Synergy Ship Management, the company’s ship manager, to complete their onboard training.
“BW LPG India is a shipping company with a strong global presence and has provided IMU students with a great opportunity and set an example for the shipping industry,” said Malini Shankar, Vice Chancellor of IMU.
“This MOU further strengthens our partnership between BW LPG India and the IMU. IMU is an important and leading maritime university in India and we are committed to a long and meaningful working relationship to advance our common interests in the advancement of future generations of seafarers,” said Captain Gaurav Bhatia, Director, BW LPG India.
Established in 2017, BW LPG India Pte Ltd has rapidly grown over the past six years to become India’s largest owner and operator of very large Indian flagged and Indian managed gas carriers.
India is one of the world’s leading suppliers of seafarers to the global shipping industry, providing around 10 percent of the workforce.
According to a report by BIMCO, an international shipping association, and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), women make up a paltry 1.2 percent of the world’s 17 lakh seafarers.
Eligible are female cadets who come from economically weaker sections (EWS) and have been admitted to the IMU.
BW LPG India is majority owned by BW LPG Ltd – the world’s leading owner and operator of LPG vessels.
