American financing agreed for Greek shipyard Ship’s crew

The US Congress has approved $125 million in funding for the Elefsis shipyard near Piraeus.

US development bank International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) will make the loan to ONEX, the company that owns the shipyard, which is undergoing a restructuring after many years of heavy debt.

ONEX is controlled by Panos Xenokostas, who has drawn up plans to make the shipyard the busiest in Greece, handling up to 200 ships per year.

ONEX already controls the country’s most active shipyard, Neorion Shipyards, based on Syros island.
