ADB ready to support $35m project to improve efficiency of Colombo port – minister

Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said the Asian Development Bank (ADB) had expressed its willingness to undertake a $35 million project to set up a digital communications system (DCS) for the port of to support Colombo.

Minister de Silva told ministry officials on Tuesday (18th) that the DCS could be in place before the end of this year.

The ministry quoted the SLFPer as saying that the DCS would effectively mitigate significant delays in commercial, maritime and handling activities at the port.

With the assertion that DCS are in use in more than 50 container ports, the minister underlined the urgent need to implement the same system here as well.

The minister said the proposed system would include the Port Authority, Customs and the Ministry of Immigration and Emigration.
